Christmas Card Ideas?

by ThallenBLiving on October 10, 2011

I know it’s only October, but I’m already in a “Christmas” frame of mind!!!   Last year, Hubby and I had a photo shoot in Central Park and used a classic “New York” photo for our Christmas cards, but this year I want something a little more out-the-box.  I’ve already started coming up with ideas, but I’d love your input.  Have you seen any holiday cards that were awesome and  fabulous?  What were they?!!!

Fine Living Tips from the White House

by ThallenBLiving on June 27, 2011

This weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to tour the White House.   I was so excited to see where our First Family lives and receives diplomatic guests from all over the world!  Aside from the historical and patriotic appeal of this tour, I was especially excited by the special touches that make this home so welcoming.  I have a few takeaways to help make your home feel more presidential!

  1. Put out fresh flowers.  All of the White House rooms had beautiful displays of fresh flowers.  Although it can get pricey to replace  floral arrangements each week, it is cheap and easy to place a clear vase with a single sunflower, or a few carnations to freshen up frequently visited rooms in your home.
  2. Decorate rooms with a theme.  The White House has the Green Room, the Blue Room, the China Room (which holds the china patterns selected by former first families).  It was all so amazing and beautifully coordinated.  While it may be daunting to accesorize rooms perfectly as in the White House, it is very easy to pick a theme and build it up over time.  For example, are you a traveler with souvenirs from amazing vacations?  Then pick a room to display your treasures.  Paint the walls, and pick fabrics to accentuate your pieces.  As the final touch, pick a beautiful display case to show off your prized possessions.
  3. Display family portraits.  It is my understanding that the White House frequently updates its photo frames with new pictures of the First Family.  They also group together current photos with historic photos around a certain theme.  For example, one group of photos display Presidents and their pets.  Of course there is Obama and Beau, George W. Bush and Barney, and First Lady Grace Coolidge with her pet raccoon!  Try grouping family photos in your home around a theme like vacations, holidays, or first day of school.

Just a Sprinkle of Baby Powder

by ThallenBLiving on November 10, 2010

I love finding new uses for old products! Baby powder has been around forever, but I recently gave it a new use in my house.  Let me begin by saying, I love my hubby… but like most men, his gym clothes smell just terrible… especially if they sit in the clothes hamper for a couple of days! Being the busy, working woman that I am, I only have time to wash clothes on the weekend. This means that his gym clothes sit in the hamper for much longer than I’d like.

In our small, NYC apartment, the clothes hamper is in the bathroom. So by Friday, I’m often greeted by a terrible stench as I get ready for work… Well y’all know Thallen B. is NOT having that! In a fit of rage one morning, I took the container of baby powder and went to town sprinkling it on the clothes in the laundry.  I shook the clothes around and made sure the powder got all the way to the bottom. Low and behold… it neutralized the stench! This is the same concept as putting baking soda in the fridge or freezer to help eliminate odor, but the baby powder made it even sweeter!

The next day, I threw the clothes in the washing machine, and the baby powder didn’t mess up a thing!  If you’ve tried this or a similar technique, please share in the comments section below!

Apartment Makeover – Painting an Accent Wall

by ThallenBLiving on July 27, 2010

I’ve been an official New Yorker for over a year now! To celebrate, we decided that our apartment needed a makeover.  The hubby and I needed something chic and sophisticated to reflect the new “grown-up” phase of our lives.  So far, each of our decorating decisions have been carefully considered, mainly so that we don’t regret our purchases later.  I’ll make to sure to keep you guys updated on the changes we’re making, and especially on the end-result.

The first major decision we’ve made is to paint an accent wall.  We decided on BayLeaf from the Martha Stewart Living Collection at Home Depot.  We purchased the eggshell finish (which is the finish between gloss and flat), and it looks AMAZING! The hubby did all the hard labor (i.e., rolling the paintbrush), but I taped off the edges with painter’s tape.  I’m really pleased with the result… it was a quick, easy, and inexpensive update!

Spring Cleaning!

by ThallenBLiving on April 4, 2009

Its time for Spring Cleaning, so I’ll be bringing you the best ways to get your home in tip-top shape before summer!

#1. The first order of business is to de-clutter! de-clutter! de-clutter! There’s no way around it… you HAVE to get rid of the junk.

Start by getting three big trash bags (or boxes)–1 for trash, 1 for donations, and 1 for storage. Then begin to separate your things into these categories. Do one room at a time. I generally like to start in the closet and have a mini-fashion show to determine what’s hot and what has fizzled!

Speaking of closets, I’ve become completely enamored with CALIFORNIA CLOSETS!!!

Oh my goodness, I could live in one of those :-D

They specialize in organization and storage for pretty much any room in your house–from the bedroom to the garage. Their website is http://www.californiaclosets.com/ You can also schedule a complimentary consultation by calling 1.888.336.9707 … and tell them Thallen B. sent you ;-)
