Prada on Overstock.com

by ThallenBLiving on March 15, 2012

For Christmas I got a gift card to www.overstock.com.  I love gifts cards to stores like Overstock because the possibilities of what you can buy are endless! It took me a month or so to narrow down what my big purchase would be… I decided it should be a splurge item that I probably wouldn’t buy for myself (at least not without agonizing over it for days!).  I remembered that last Fall I misplaced my Dolce and Gabbana sunglasses and had mourned the loss for months.  This would be the perfect opportunity to replace them.  While I was a little leery of buying sunglasses online, Overstock has a nice selection.  I ultimately chose a pair of Prada cateye frames, that are a whimsical play on the classic silhouette I love.  Best part… they come with all the Prada accessories– case, cloth and certificate of authenticity.  I’m totally pleased with my purchase!  Do you shop at Overstock? What’s your favorite online store?

Rent the Runway

by ThallenBLiving on October 30, 2011

A reader recently asked me if I ever used Rent the Runway for an event.  I have indeed used Rent the Runway and I had an awesome experience with them.  Last year for a semi-formal fraternity ball, I needed a statement dress but had little time to shop.  I also wanted something memorable, but in the age of facebook… memorable means you can never wear it again!  Rent the Runway was the perfect solution.

I rented a fuchsia Herve Leger strapless dress, paired with my own black platform Louboutins and BAM!  I loved my outfit and received compliments all night.  The next day I packed up the dress in the pre-paid envelope they provided and dropped it in the nearest mailbox.  The total process was seamless and affordable… Here’s a step-by-step of what to do:

  1. Sign up for a free account at Renttherunway.com
  2. Browse the dresses available for the date of your event.  I play it safe by putting in a day before I actually need to wear the dress. That way I know I’ll get it on time.
  3. Order the dress. You can get a second dress in the same style for free! The dress will be delivered to your door in a Rent the Runway garment bag that’s yours to keep! The package will include a pre-paid envelope to return the dress and samples of products to try such as doublestick tape :-)
  4. Return the dress (meaning have it postmarked) by the date they tell you, otherwise they charge your credit card for the entire value of the dress.  Don’t worry about cleaning it.  They clean the dress for you!

Has anyone else tried Rent the Runway? Do you love it too?!

UGG Boots

by ThallenBLiving on October 26, 2011

Last year my friends had an intervention on my behalf.  They told me that the time had come to lay my pink Ugg boots to rest :-( I admit I did not want to face the music that these boots could not be saved.  Last season I sent them to the Leather Spa (55th Street between 5th and 6th Ave) to have them “rejuvenated.”  But this year not even the Leather Spa could save them.

I knew I could not bear a New York winter without them, so I recently ordered a brand new pair of Classic Tall Ugg boots that I can’t wait to break in!

If you don’t own a pair… please believe these boots will make you happy it’s winter time! They are so warm, comfortable and will work with most casual outfits.  While I admit my pink pair were a bit… shall I say… whimsical, my new pair in black are so chic! I recommend you to go immediately to the nearest Ugg retailer and try on a pair… Experience the “amazing-ness” that is Ugg!

Fall Wardrobe Splurges

by ThallenBLiving on October 9, 2011

I can’t believe it’s October already.  The magazines are now filled with Fall wardrobe pieces and the stores are showcasing their new collections.  I’ve been thinking about some items want for Autumn 2011 ever since Autumn 2010.  I thought I’d give you the exclusive into what I’m staples I have my eye on.  I say “staples” because  if I pay big dollars for something I want to keep it long enough that my great-great-grandchildren can wear it 30 years from now, lol!  So here’s my wishlist:

Burberry Belted Trench — The jacket is a classic, but I love the chicness of the belt and the awesome metallic color.  But honestly, I’d probably buy it in black… I mean, I am a New Yorker and we LIVE in black!

Louis Vuitton Document Carrier — Nothing beats the classic design of a Louis Vuitton Briefcase.  Typically I’m a bigger fan of the Daimier print instead of the Monogram print, but in this instance the classic monogram gives the carrier an old school sophistication that more mature business clients are sure to appreciate.

Tiffany’s Celebration Rings — These rings are simple and understated, yet bold and elegant.  I just love them.  The best part is that you can add to your collection and mix and match over time.  They are even more precious if someone you loves buys one to celebrate special milestones in your lives together (hint hint, in case my hubby is reading this post!).

Packing Light for Long Vacations

by ThallenBLiving on June 28, 2011

A few weeks ago I went on a week-long vacation to Italy.  We toured Rome, Florence and Venice, which means we were on the move every couple of days.  I needed to pick up and go with as little effort as possible, so I made a personal challenge to pack everything I needed in one rolling duffle bag (similar to the one pictured above).  My trip companions were shocked at how I managed to accomplish this amazing feat… and as I promised them, I will share my secrets of packing light here on Thallen B. Living.

  • Roll Everything. I am a big fan of the milatary form of packing where you roll your clothing instead of folding them.  It seems that you can get so much more into tight spaces because you use all the nooks and crannies of your bag.  In addition to being a space saver, rolling your clothes helps to avoid wrinkles and creases caused by folding.
  • Travel-Size Toiletries. I really had no choice about the size of my toiletries since I carried this bag onto the airplane.  I wanted to travel as light as possible, so I had no problems complying with the airline restrictions of less than 4oz for liquid products.  Travel-size toiletries are often very cheap (like, $1.00 or less) and can be found at most convenience stores, supermarkets, and always at Target or Walmart.
  • Neutral Colors. When planning my outfits, I picked neutral colors like blue, black, and gray that could be easily mixed and matched.  Over seven days, I probably had four or five distinct outfits, and mixed them up over the remaining days.
  • Versatile Shoes. The same concept applies for shoes.  I took two pair, although I orginally packed three (at the last minute I decided I didn’t “need” the athletic shoes after all).   My two pair included black Tory Burch flats, which are comfortable for walking, but can dress up an outfit because of the stylish hardware.  I also packed a pair of black Havaianas sandals.  These were also comfortable for walking and lounging around, and didn’t take up much space.

Tiffany’s Blue Box, PLEEEEEEEASE!

by ThallenBLiving on March 17, 2010

I don’t know any girl who would turn down a Tiffany’s Blue Box, especially if there’s something sparkly inside!  But let’s face it, not everyone can afford to have breakfast (lunch or dinner) at Tiffany’s…. or can you?

I love Tiffany’s just as much as the next girl, but I’m also mindful of my wallet.  So, it’s with great pleasure that I let you in on my little secret… I ADORE Tiffany’s Sterling Silver Collection! I can justify buying a piece or two every now and then because all stylish women NEED sterling silver basics.  Since these items are some of the most affordable pieces Tiffany’s has to offer, why not treat yourself?!!

My personal faves are the Tiffany’s Beads which include earrings and a necklace.  They look like modern-day pearls, in sterling silver.  I also like the heart studs, which I gave to my mother as a “just-because” gift.  And of course I live in my Tiffany’s charm bracelet… and yes, I actually collect and add new charms! All of these items are between $100 and $300.

I haven’t had the chance to check out their gold collection, but I’m sure it’s just as nice.  So go ahead, splurge a little and treat yourself to that little blue box!

Manicures for the Masses

by ThallenBLiving on September 22, 2009

Lately, nail polish has gone to whole new level! I’ve seen everything from Hello Kitty to Obama’s face on people’s fingernails!!! Although nail polish, like any other fashion statement, is your way to show the world your “unique” self… I’d argue that “manicures for the masses” should not be taken into the workplace.

For professional settings, your manicure should illustrate characteristics that your co-workers and clients should know about you.  These characteristics include: attention to detail, precision, good hygiene, and of course MODERATION! There are certain things that your manicure should NOT convey, which definitely  include your favorite cartoon character or your political views!

If you must make a statement with your nail polish, remember moderation is key. If you must have length, then use clear or nude polish.  If you want a brighter color, opt for a shorter cut. If you do use bright colors, try to stay away from neon colors like yellow, or blue! A bright red is just as exciting and not as offensive. Just make sure that you have a regular manicure appointment… there’s nothing worse than chipped polish on a professional hand :-)

I know some of you may think I’m trying to cramp your creative style; but, don’t forget, if you really want to be wild and crazy you still have 10 toes!!!

Today at the U.S. Open…

by ThallenBLiving on September 15, 2009

Today I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the US Open tennis match here in New York City! I watched two finals matches–the Women’s Doubles and the Men’s Singles.  Needless to say, they were both amazing games. Venus and Serena took home their 10th Grand Slam win… and Del Potro, the #6 seed, took on and beat Federer (who up until this point was #1 in the category)!!! I always root for the underdog!!!

Now, don’t worry, Thallen B. Living has not turned into a sports blog… Instead, I thought I’d comment a bit on the US Open fashion that I viewed in the stands.

Today, there was a wide variety of fashion choices among the spectators.  People wore everything from jeans to sundresses, khakis to pinstriped suits.  My overall opinion is that sporting events such as these are now a fashion free-for-all!  As a word of advice for anyone who plans to attend a US Open in the future, please wear whatever makes you comfortable! The weather can be shifty, and you may experience drastically different temperatures and weather conditions throughout the day.  However, I would err on the side of formality (I wore a cotton button-down blouse, cotton pants (a la Audrey Hepburn) and a knit sweater).  Many celebrities were in attendance and they all looked chic and pulled together.  Gwen Stefani, who was my personal favorite, donned her signature red lipstick and a free-flowing blouse.  Trust me, in comparison to the rest of the world, American fans have become waaaaay too casual when it comes to events like these!!! Do your part to ensure America stays at the top of the International Fashion Game!!!

Love Thy Neighbor… and Follow the Yellow Brick Journey

by ThallenBLiving on September 13, 2009

Last night, I witnessed several AMAZING events here in NYC! The first of which was the AMAZING Kimberly Nichole, who is a singer/songwriter hailing from Atlanta, GA.  Ms. Nichole entered the venue in a drop dead black catsuit, with a sheer, plunging neckline! Atop of her perfectly poised head was a 1930′s style top-hat… FIERCENESS at it’s finest!!! As if her ensemble was not “diva” enough… she opened her mouth!!! The entire room was in awe of the powerful voice which followed.  Her music is edgy, creative, and perfectly blends old soul and new funk.  Ms. Nichole also covered some of the greatest hits  like MJ’s “Dirty Diana” and Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.” Her debut album is called “The Yellow Brick Journey”Click here for a video introducing Kimberly Nichole … around minute 1:15 you can see the 1930′s hat that I am now in love with!!!

The next amazing thing I saw was a remarkable ACT OF KINDNESS in NYC!!! Sitting up front, right below the stage were several tables.  At one table was a couple of friends, and sitting at the table next to them was a young lady who clearly came to the concert by herself (might I add that it is VERY BRAVE to venture out in New York City nightlife on your own!). Now, what I’m about to tell you will shock you, just as it shocked me  (esp. for those of you who live in the city). One of the girls at the table of two, asked the single lady if she came to the event by herself.  The single lady responded that she indeed had.  Then the girls introduced themselves, and invited the single lady to come sit at their table so she wouldn’t have to be alone the entire night.  WASN’T THAT NICE?!!! It is especially nice considering New Yorkers are notorious for ignoring each other!!! Surely those friendly girls are faithful readers of Thallen B. Living because they know what etiquette and genuine kindness is all about! I was so pleased! And, it warmed my heart to see such kindness in the world! Now let’s all take a lesson from this… I challenge each of you to do at least one random act of kindness for a stranger this week… Come on! Pass it forward :-)
